Purpose of this Blog

Pastel can easily be added to an existing watercolor painting to create texture, contrast and interesting detail.

I am looking at something that is more visually exciting.  My intent in combining the two mediums is to create value and textural contrast.  I am using the pastel chalks to secure a planned watercolor image.  A loose watercolor under-painting with attention to color balance and design becomes the subject as it is surrounded by the opaque pastels.  The idea is not to cover the watercolor with pastel but to increase its vibrancy by the juxtaposition of pastel. This is similar to the  concept of painting around a subject familiar to watercolor artists as "negative painting".

My premise is that pastel's opaque nature will enhance the brilliance associated with watercolor painting by increasing contrast. The transparent watercolor becomes the light; the pastel an opaque foil.

Can Watercolor and Soft Pastel Work Together?  The answer is YES!

The light values are watercolor washes.  The dark values are pastel.
